I remember the days when I was naive to think Role Playing Game(RPG) were video games for hardcore gamers. It was much later that I realized that RPGs have existed in physical formats as well. These games can be played by anyone and everyone. And now that I have played a lot of them, I can say with confidence that RPGs not only are really fun but also teach you skills that you can use in the real world. RPGs also provide for fun social gatherings.

RPGs cultivate creativity, leadership and team-player attitude, strategic and critical thinking. All of them are essential qualities for a successful career. While working for a Multi-National Company, I realized that I failed to develop many of these important skills in my childhood days. I would not have struggled in my initial career days had I made the extra effort to organize and play RPGs with my friends. These games are far more interesting than other traditional games.

WHAT ARE ROLE PLAYING GAMES?

Role Playing Games let you assume the role of your favorite character ( be it a doctor, a cute barbie, a soldier, a mechanic, a designer or a businessman). With every game session you toil and struggle to find something new. In the process, you tend to read books, surf the internet and expand your horizons regarding the subject matter. You bend the wires in your brain to expand the problem, look at choices in front of you and come up with creative solutions -> The most critical attribute of a problem solver.

These games help live a fantasy life you dream of, during which you find your interests and your strengths and weaknesses.  Maybe you’ll find that you’re a good leader, choreographing a perfect battle where nobody gets too hurt. Or maybe you’ll find that you’re more of a support-type, ready to jump to someone’s aid when they need it. Working in teams helps you learn to empathize and cooperate and simultaneously move towards a common goal by taking everyone together.

Why Moms Should Equip Kids With Role Playing Games?

Success Stories

The following  instances illustrate how aware mothers are increasingly adopting RPGs for the holistic development of their kids:

Behavior Of Mothers In Big Indian Cities

1) Indian working mothers in large cities have already realized the advantage of RPG and filling the wardrobes of their kids with massive role-playing games.  In one such example, Mrs Patil from Bangalore says that she has observed a dramatic change in her kid’s behavior after her kid started playing. She is not shy anymore. Her grades have improved. She is able to find her strength in being a leader at school by organizing events, outdoor activities and participating and winning inter-school competitions.

2) A peculiar aspect that has emerged out of the social playing activity is that mothers have started bonding together and are sharing parenting tips with one another.

3)  In the USA mothers take initiatives to invite kid’s friends over and organize RPG games simply to increase their social and cooperative skills.

What Moms Of Achievers Have To Say

1) Says the mother of Neerav, an IIT Mumbai computer science student:  “I was involved with my son not only for his studies but for his all-round development. Playing RPG, both board games and video games, was the time when I bonded with my son, and my kid learnt a lot. One important aspect he learnt very early by playing RPG is the importance of asking questions and getting his doubt cleared in classes. His inquisitiveness grew. At the end of the day whatever topic he was studying he was readily able to explain back to me. Neerav solved tough questions of math and science . He could easily clear his friends’ doubts and became a problem solver in his class.

2) The mother of  Piyali, the girl who cracked the prestigious AIMS exam said :”most Indian parents take the initiative of enrolling them to music classes, badminton classes but cannot keep up with their progress in these extracurricular activities as they don’t consider them as important. I made sure that I got involved in my kid’s personality development and helped her find her strengths and weaknesses. The impact of playing role-playing games together was  that it enhanced her critical thinking exponentially. She won all her debate and essay writing competitions as she was able to think diversely on every topic and think about diverse topics. She was never satisfied with superficial answers to questions.”

Some Failures

Stories of some parents have also emerged whose kids failed to harness the above-mentioned abilities at the right time and these parents somewhat regret their sluggishness in taking initiatives

  1. “My child did well in academics and I was under the impression that it is the only accomplishment that will make him successful. However, as he reached standard 11 as started preparing for his competitive exams, I started realizing the fact that he lacked the mental inquisitiveness and rigor that bright student in his class had and he did not have time to develop those skills at that point of time. Consequently, he could not ace the exams of top engineering institutions in the country.”
  2. “I wonder my child could have done better if instead of giving him mobile phone and tablets, I would have enrolled him in extracurricular activities. When I met the proud neighbor whose son recently cracked the prestigious UPSC exam in the first attempt, I was inclined to funnily ask her “Kya khila ke bada kiya hai apne bete ko” ( what pedigree have you provided your son with). She happily said that I was not ready to compromise with the all-round development of my kid and enrolled him in activities that made him sharp. I bought the best RPG games for my kids to play, no matter how expensive they were as these RPG toys were well-researched and developed to suit my kid’s need.”

COMMITMENT SCORE

Dr Prahlad Bansal, a famous psychologist, who collated all the above information, devised a commitment test and asked many Indian parents take it in order to check the commitment level of the parents towards their kids. Take the following commitment test to know your score.

Dr Bansal, along with some of his colleagues, collected a list of most effective role-playing games that can maximize the brain development of the child. All these games are readily available on Amazon. The List has been shared above.

Massive Benefits Of Role Playing Games

Simple observations you can have to measure your child’s progress after he has played enough RPG games :

  1. Behaving like a leader:

Excellent leaders are excellent at story-telling: that is  how they inspire masses. An important aspect of these RPGs are the  elements of storytelling- one of the most powerful techniques that activates the brain. RPGs give you the freedom and the ability to tell a story in the most creative way. When we tell stories—or experience them—our brains have to process language, the cause and effect of events, and also relate it to our own pre-existing experiences. While you’re playing a role-playing game, your brain is firing on all cylinders. Although in some RPGs, there are rules, those rules merely provide bare bones for whatever story you and your team want to create.
  2. Hungry for knowledge:
You kids will develop a habit of reading more and more books, blogs etc., so that he/she can find more knowledge to solve the problem.
  3. Not shy to speak in front of strangers
Playing RPG improves your kid’s social skills.Your kid will be able to talk to other people and express how he feels about certain situations and put forward his point of view, all in a group of people. Role-playing games come with a social network built directly into them.
  4. He will strive to win:
You kids will develop strategies and not only tactics that will help him win long term battles. He
will have a high probability of winning prizes at school and state and country level competitions. He will probably become the smartest and most sort after kid in the locality.
  5. Critical thinking:

Learning how to solve problems develops your critical thinking and can help you approach problems in the future with the right mindset. In role-playing games, you’re simultaneously the chess player and the chess piece. You learn to see problems from multiple perspectives and realize that there’s always a light at the end of the dark, goblin-filled cave.
  6. Creativity:

Creativity is the bread and butter of role-playing games. They have a certain quality that will allow your kid to transcend typical game interactions. He will have real freedom and the ability to move the story forward to how he sees fit.
  7. Team player:
Learning to be a team player is highly important in the professional world. Your kid will have take on a role at work and  will have to do the things that he is  trained to do, and it works the same way in a role-playing game. The character your kid will play in RPG  normally has a particular skill set, and that fills a role on a diverse team. Just like at work, if you don’t do your job, the whole team can suffer from it.
Most role playing games don’t end in a “win” or a “loss”, but they still require teamwork. The events depend on players’ actions, just like any other game, and failure to work with other players will guarantee a not-so-fun time. Role-playing games are designed from the ground up to be cooperative and it can be a lot of fun to play a game where there are no winners and losers.
  8. Problem solver:
Role-playing games and their campaigns are problem after problem, all just barely solvable. As each event of the game unfolds, your kid will be forced to think on his feet and react. Consequently, he will develop some improvisation skill and feel a rush whenever his group finds a clever way to tackle a tough problem. In fact, some of his most memorable moments will likely end up being times that he felt like his back was against the wall, but he managed to pull through using his wit.
